The Former President's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" policies pose an existential risk to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The actual danger confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics paint a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Question

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. The EU still lacks a true capital markets union, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: high-quality human capital, top-tier education systems, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
